NFOP BRANCH 403 (British Steel) – CORBY SUB - BRANCH

Notes on Meeting Held in Silver Band Club, Corby on Tuesday 6th September 2011

The latest meeting of the Corby sub – branch of the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners was held on the 6th September 2011 in the Silver Band Club, Denford Road, Corby.

Prior to dealing with sub-branch business matters, Mr. W. Dalziell from Corby Borough Council gave a talk on Corby’s heritage, the establishment of the new heritage centre in Corby old village and the facilities and services provided by the new centre. The talk was well received by the 21 members attending, as evidenced by members’ responses to the wide range of slides used in Mr. Dalziell’s presentation, many of which triggered fond memories of early life in Corby and particularly in the steel industry. Mr. Dalziell’s presentation was not confined to the more recent steelmaking history of Corby but also to its’ ironmaking history dating back centuries.

Following Mr. Dalziell’s presentation, Robin Murdoch reported on matters arising from the latest meeting of the parent British Steel branch held in Birmingham on 27th July 2011.

Feedback from members who had joined the Kettering branch of the BT & RM Veterans group on their day trip to Bourton-on-the-Water on 20th July 2011 was very positive and members supported the idea of repeating this event as and when the Kettering pensioners group could accommodate the Corby pensioners in their future programme.

Finally, members supported a proposal to hold a Christmas lunch again this year and committee members were sanctioned to proceed with arrangements having considered the suitability of alternative venues, menus and prices (Post Meeting Note – this has now been arranged for Thursday 15th December at The Thornhill Arms, Rushton).

With this Joe Sims closed the meeting and invited members attending to tuck into the buffet provided by the branch for members. A voluntary collection raised £25 towards the cost of the buffet.

Members will be advised of the date of the next meeting via the NFOP magazine and the www.steelpensioners.co.uk website.
