Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Corby sub - branch of the National Association of British Steel Pensioners was held in the Silver Band Club, Denford Road, Corby on 15th June 2010. Existing branch officials were re - elected for the year 2010 - 2011 i.e. Mr. J. Sims - Chairman, Mr. K. Harden - Secretary and Mr. R. Murdoch - Treasurer. Possible future events were discussed briefly but a final decision was held over till the next meeting on 7th September 2010 when a better turnout of members would be expected.

Notes on Meeting Held in Silver Band Club, Corby on Tuesday 13th April 2010

The meeting was opened at 12.06pm by Chairman Joe Sims inviting the guest speaker, Louise Bagshawe, prospective Conservative candidate for the Corby constituency in the forthcoming general election, to present her talk to association members present. Ms. Bagshawe made no apologies for the fact that her presentation would be heavily influenced by the Conservative party’s manifesto which was released earlier that morning. While recognising that many of those present would not automatically be supporters of the Conservative party, she nevertheless did stress the importance of everyone exercising their vote irrespective of the party voted for.

Following her presentation Ms. Bagshawe responded to a series of questions from members which, given the make up of the audience, were not surprisingly dominated by questions on pensions, tax, the war in Afghanistan and human rights.

Following Ms. Bagshawe’s presentation, Robin Murdoch gave a brief resume of matters dealt with at meetings of the Unite 403 Branch meetings held in Birmingham since the last Corby sub – branch meeting held on 17th November 2009.

Particular mention was made of:

  1. The proposal to change the name of the National Federation of BT, Royal Mail and BS Pensioners, currently “Unite”, to avoid confusion with the trade union of the same name ( reference the article in the March/April 2010 Unite magazine)
  2. The current debate on the financial situation of the parent organisation and proposals to increase subscriptions and possibly modify the existing rebate arrangements for Unite branches
  3. The current financial position of the Corby branch following receipt of the latest rebate from the Unite 403 Branch treasurer (bank balance £643). It was emphasised that these rebates should be used primarily for social events for sub - branch members.

Brief mention was also made of the association welfare fund, details of which could be found together with other information and news items in the association’s web site www.steelpensioners.co.uk  (Editorial note:  The Welfare Fund details are not on the steelpensioners website.  They are on the new NFOP website at http://www.nfop.org.uk/nfop/NFOP_charity.html  )

Joe Sims proposed the setting up of a social committee to oversee the organisation of social events and requested volunteers for Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. There were no volunteers and it was decided therefore to postpone this matter to a future meeting of the branch.

George Ralston asked if it would be possible for the branch to make a donation towards the erection of a plaque on the existing steelman monument in Corby town centre, in recognition of those who worked on the PLUTO project during the second world war. The treasurer agreed to pursue this request with the treasurer of the Unite 403 Branch.

It was agreed that, pending confirmation of the Unite Branch 403 name change, the Corby sub – branch should temporarily be referred to as the Corby Steelworks Pensioners Committee in any advertising e.g. Corby Radio, Evening Telegraph for branch meetings and social events where applicable.

With this the Chairman closed the meeting.

19 members attended. A collection for the buffet raised £27.

Members to be advised of the date of the next meeting, proposed for Tuesday 7th September 2010.
