If you are a British Steel pensioner or deferred pensioner, for the sake of yourself and your dependants you should think seriously about joining our association (now the Steel Branch of N.F.O.P. - see below)-- Why?   Because we are the only national organisation which monitors the operation and administration of the British Steel Pension Scheme on your behalf. You should also be aware that without the continued support of British Steel pensioners the Association would not be able to continue to provide this essential service.

So don't leave it to others by being a free rider - stand up and be counted by joining us now, next year could be too late.

If you are not a British Steel pensioner do you know someone who is? A relative, a friend or a neighbour? If you do it could be in their best interest to bring the contents of this website to their attention.

The Association was formed in 1994 in order to challenge some of the changes to the company pension scheme which disadvantaged older pensioners. Eventually these matters were resolved but the Association continued to monitor the performance of the pension scheme and changes to its rules. As a result of this activity communication between pensioners and the scheme administration has greatly improved and one of our members has been appointed to the scheme management committee. At the same time the Association has campaigned to improve legislation governing both company and state pensions as well as other matters affecting pensioners' welfare.

In the course of this latter activity we have joined forces with other similar organisations in order to increase our effectiveness. We are affiliated to the Occupational Pensioners Alliance (OPA) and over several years we worked closely with the National Federation of Post Office and BT Pensioners. On 1st May, 2004 we formally merged with them under the name "UNITE". At the time of the merger we had about two thousand six hundred members (now almost 10,000 - Nov. 2009) and our new structure improved our ability to represent their interests and those of other British Steel pensioners.  However, our organization became confused with a trade union which had adopted the same name and in May, 2010 we changed to the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners (NFOP).   For details of the merger process click on "NEWS" below and select the appropriate item from the menu.

We are organised on a regional basis with local committees sending representatives to National Committee meetings.  Details of local committees can be found on the NEWS page.
